> Giving rise to the mind has five \[stages\]: First is giving rise to the mind of the lineage (gotra), which refers to before the bhūmis. Second is giving rise to the mind of faith, which refers to the first three bhūmis, because they are identical to the worldly cultivation of dāna, śīla, and kṣānti. Third is giving rise to the mind of illumination, which refers to the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh bhūmis, because they are identical to the supramundane: on the fourth bhūmi, one engages in contemplation of the bodhipakṣadharma, identical to a stream-enterer; on the fifth bhūmi, one engages in contemplation of the Four Noble Truths, identical to an arhat; on the sixth bhūmi, one engages in contemplation of dependent origination, identical to a pratyekabuddha; and on the seventh bhūmi, pure contemplation of animitta is truly \[the practice of\] a bodhisattva. Fourth is giving rise to the irreversible mind, which refers to the eighth, ninth, and tenth bhūmis. Fifth is giving rise to the unexcelled mind, which refers to the buddha-bhūmi. These are also called the five kinds of bodhi, named the lineage bodhi, and so forth. Here, "giving rise to the mind" refers to giving rise to the mind of faith; that is, because a bodhisattva on the first bhūmi inwardly contemplates the principle of tathatā that is non-abiding, it is called "giving rise to the mind without abiding."
