> As for 'would not equal a hundredth part' and so forth: the treatise master has four kinds of comparative superiority. Namely: first, superiority in number; second, superiority in power; third, superiority in having no parallel; fourth, superiority in cause. By way of explanation: 'superiority in number' means comparative measurement by number; the Hīnayāna has sixty-two orders of numbers, the Avataṃsaka has one hundred and twenty orders of numbers, and this region \[China\] has fifteen, namely: one, ten, hundred, thousand, ten thousand, and so forth. Those comparatively measured by such numbers can all be known in terms of the karmic retributions of birth and death. If one receives and upholds this sūtra, all the merits of attaining Buddhahood in the future cannot be comparatively measured by such numbers; therefore it is called 'superiority in number'.
