### [2.328](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1700.2.328)

> The commentary states: Vasubandhu says that the third part clarifies that dharmas and the self lack reality, within which there are two sections: first, clarifying the absence of a self; second, from 'one who gives rise to the mind of anuttarā...' onward, clarifying the absence of dharmas. In the first part, the Buddha first recounts this external doubt and asks whether he understands or not; next, Subhūti anticipates the answer and clarifies that he does not understand; this is the first part. That is, followers of the Hīnayāna and others say: 'Words must possess an underlying substance; the mind does not take non-existence as its object. Because words possess an underlying substance, when the Buddha speaks of the view of a self and so forth, it clarifies that a real self exists; because the mind does not take non-existence as its object, the meaning clung to must surely establish its existence.' To allow for such words, \[the text\] therefore says: 'If someone were to say'.
