To sever this doubt, he speaks the simile of entering darkness and so forth. Herein there are two parts: first, clarifying that abiding in things is the cause of saṃsāra; second, revealing that non-abiding is supramundane activity. This is the first. The verse says: > "Although existing truly in time and space, > Yet tathatā is not attained; > Being without wisdom due to abiding in dharmas, > The others, possessing wisdom, attain it." > The meaning here is: "Although tathatā truly exists at all times and places, because they lack wisdom and their minds abide in dharmas, they do not understand how to transcend, just like entering darkness, not knowing where one is going.
