> Commentary: Vasubandhu says: this is the fourth point, the overturning of obstacles. As explained in the Abhidharmasamuccaya, there are five kinds of karma created with intention: first, by command of another, where one has no personal joy; second, by solicitation of another, where one acts hesitantly; third, through lack of understanding, such as infants and animals; fourth, out of fundamental attachment, where one acts knowing it is an offense, mostly like monastics; fifth, through inverted conceptualization, where one acts without recognizing it, mostly like householders. The karma created by the first three does not necessarily lead to hell; the karma created by the latter two definitely leads to hell. The karma of the latter two, once created, must be experienced. Because of being able to receive, uphold, read, and recite this sūtra, former heavy karma is overturned into being despised and disparaged by others in the present life, and the karma that should have led to falling into the evil destinies is thereby completely extinguished. This applies to those who receive and uphold it with a middling mind. If someone upholds and recites it with an elevated mind, the transgressions are extinguished all at once without even being despised by others, turning the heavy into the light. If someone receives and upholds it with an inferior mind, their transgressions are not necessarily extinguished. Another explanation: if both time and retribution are indefinite, it is entirely extinguished; if retribution is definite but time is indefinite, that which should be experienced in the future is overturned to be experienced lightly in the present life. Because of this, even receiving it with slight faith yields merit greater than the former renunciation of bodies and lives.
