> First, properly concluding by returning to the middle; afterward, citing the teaching as proof. As for the raft metaphor, provisionally using words to reveal the meaning means that one should not cling to the meaning according to the words. Not clinging is simply not grasping, not discarding entirely. The verse says: 'Not abiding, yet complying; / Within dharmas one realizes cognition.' The commentary's explanation says: '"Not abiding" means attaining realized cognition, relinquishing the teaching like reaching the other shore; "complying" means complying with the teaching of that realized cognition, like not yet having reached the shore.' Asaṅga says: '"Even dharmas should be abandoned" is because the real mark arises; "how much more non-dharmas" is because in principle it should not be.' \[Section\] Three, severing the doubt: 'If there are no marks, how can there be preaching?' The commentary says: 'Previously it was said that the Buddha cannot be seen by way of marks and that the Buddha is not conditioned; how then could Śākyamuni attain anuttara-bodhi? How could he preach the Dharma?' The text that severs this has two parts: First, severing doubt through questions and answers, in four sections: First, raising the cause of doubt to question.
