> For the opening question, the treatise says: 'If one is free from the perception of the marks of giving and so forth, how is the merit of giving accomplished?' From 'if a bodhisattva' onward is the explanation, within which there are three \[parts\]: first, the teaching in terms of principles, severing the doubt that there is no merit by means of \[showing it is\] inconceivable. From 'eastern direction' onward is the explanation through simile, which is understandable. From 'the bodhisattva who... without abiding in marks' onward is the application of the simile to the principle. Regarding empty space, Asaṅga says it is like empty space due to three causes and conditions: first, pervading everywhere, meaning merit arises while abiding in the non-abiding mark; second, broad and vast, because it is lofty, vast, and supreme; third, inexhaustible, because it is ultimately without end.
