> Fourth, the mark of conforming to renunciation. Asaṅga states: 'Conforming to the selflessness of persons and dharmas, one thereby attains renunciation.' There are three parts to the text: / First, a dream exemplifies the past. Asaṅga states: 'Those past formations are like a dream because they are the loci of memory.' The treatise states: 'One should view all that was accumulated and formed in the past as identical to dream objects, because they are purely of the nature of memory.' Guṇaprabha states: 'Contemplate the agent: just as objects seen and heard in a dream dwell as habituations through mental discrimination, although there is no agent, various objects appear distinctly before one. In this way, sentient beings from time without beginning have afflictions and wholesome and unwholesome karma that dwell as habituations; although there is no self that is the agent, endless saṃsāric events and the like manifest.' / Second, lightning exemplifies the present. The treatise states: 'Because it does not abide for an instant.' Guṇaprabha states: 'Contemplate the mind as like lightning: the moment it arises, it ceases.' Third, a cloud exemplifies the future. The treatise states: 'Because at the time of the seed, the ālayavijñāna serves as the seed-root for all dharmas.' Asaṅga states: 'Those coarse and evil seeds resemble empty space; because they draw forth the mind, they are like clouds.' / Asaṅga states: 'Knowing the formations of the three times in this way, one penetrates selflessness; this reveals the mark of conforming to renunciation.' Dayun states: 'The past and future lack substance, and the present does not abide; thus the three times are empty, and one penetrates selflessness.'
