> From "later scholars" below, he rebukes their deviation from the treatises. That is, those who composed commentaries after Asaṅga and Vasubandhu. "How can there be doubt?" is an expression of reproach. "Addition" is what was mentioned earlier as matching with technical terms: outside of the root treatises, adding the dharmalakṣaṇa and stages of practice of the Great and Small Vehicles; hence it is called "addition." "Abandonment" is what was mentioned earlier as merely speaking of the single true: casting aside the two treatises and providing their own separate explanations. I do not know whether those people say, "I surpass the bodhisattvas," or whether they do not know the treatises composed by the bodhisattvas. If they say, "It is not that I surpass the bodhisattvas, nor is it that I do not know of the treatises composed, but simply that by setting my aspiration on the Way and participating in the profound, forgetting words and seizing the meaning, cutting directly across to cultivate and advance without attending to branches and streams, who has the mental energy to investigate the treatise texts?"—then one should reproach them, saying: "When it comes to investigating treatises to explain the sūtra you claim to lack mental energy, yet when speculating from the heart and following whim, how is your mental energy so abundant?" "Moreover" is a phrase that cuts through the matter. Without debating the rest of their direct shortcuts, he rebukes them with the meaning: "Now, setting aside whether you have principle or lack principle, for now \[consider that\] the treatise authors are superior persons who have entered the bhūmis, and furthermore received the meanings and phrases from Maitreya; this is indeed transmitted from Buddha to Buddha, passed down through masters. How can you later scholars stubbornly violate this and follow your own whims? First, ordinary beings and sages, the foolish and the wise, are suspended far apart. Second, these are the words of masters and fathers. Turning one's back on wisdom to follow foolishness, rebelling against one's teachers without etiquette, is like a son intentionally defying what his father has done—how could it accord with the Heavenly Way?" Therefore, he cites the teachers to rebuke them.
