> The sixth: the sūtra runs from "The Buddha told Subhūti, 'What do you think? Formerly, when the Tathāgata was with Dīpaṃkara Buddha..." down to "...there was actually nothing attained." How is it that abandoning hindrances brings about the attainment of the abiding? The commentary next says: from "Abandoning the..." down is the hindrance to be abandoned. From "Not abandoning..." down concludes the meaning of the abiding. Therein, the upper phrase establishes the abiding, and the lower phrase abandons the hindrance. If one departs from the Buddha's era, it is not called an abiding-place; lacking a Buddha preaching the Dharma, it is then of little learning and becomes a hindrance. If one does not depart from the Buddha's era, it constitutes an abiding-place; constantly meeting the Buddha preaching the Dharma, one is then endowed with much learning and abandons the hindrance. However, whenever one cultivates practice, wisdom is the root; wishing to obtain wisdom, one must have much learning; hence relying on the Buddha to abide abandons the hindrance of little learning. Therefore a sūtra says: "Much learning increases wisdom; diligent learning is the foremost method."
