> The ninth: the sūtra runs from "Subhūti, as many grains of sand as there are in the Ganges..." down to "...the Tathāgata has nothing preached." From "Abandoning the delight..." down: the hindrance to be abandoned. Following non-Buddhist treatises is precisely distraction; if one can merely stay far from them, the abiding is accomplished. That is, the writings of Confucianism and Mohism—aside from the Buddha's teaching, all are non-Buddhist treatises. Because matters of non-Buddhist treatises are the source of fame and gain, if one seeks fame, how could the mind be free from distraction? Furthermore, obtaining it brings joy, losing it brings suffering; suffering brings grief, joy brings excess. Due to these karmic entanglements, one sinks for lifetimes; tracing back to the origin, it is all due to following non-Buddhist treatises.
