> The twelfth: the sūtra runs from "Subhūti, if a good man or good woman gives away bodies equal to the sands of the Ganges..." down to "...this is named the foremost pāramitā." From "Abandoning delight..." down: the hindrance to be abandoned. However, the name of the hindrance has omissions; if one seeks completeness, it does not exceed the name of the abiding. Merely delighting in flavor constitutes a hindrance, while staying far from it constitutes an abiding. To explain its giving rise to faults as a hindrance, there are five layers: 1. Seeking gain for the sake of the body. 2. Causing the body to be weary and exhausted through seeking gain and offerings; this again has two: first, causing the body to be weary and exhausted through heedlessness; second, when seeking without obtaining, the body is also weary and exhausted. 3. Because the body is weary, causing the mind to be afflicted. 4. Because the mind is afflicted, not giving rise to vigor. 5. Because of lacking vigor, retrogressing and losing merit.
