> In the fourth part, the sūtra's 'Why is this?': this questions. The meaning is: suppose what is seen has sentient beings to be liberated—what fault is there in this? Next it resolves this: 'If a bodhisattva has the mark of a self, etc., they are not a bodhisattva.' This is an explanation by negation. The meaning is: a true bodhisattva definitely has no self as the liberating subject; how could they still perceive sentient beings attaining extinction and liberation? 'Distancing oneself from the support of the view of a self, sentient beings, etc.': 'support' is an alternative name for the view of a self; it is also called 'continuity'. In Sanskrit it is satkāya\[-dṛṣṭi\], translated here as 'view of a personal entity' (shenjian), which is equivalent to self, person, living being, etc.
