### [5.254](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1702.5.254)

> "There is not a single phenomenon of attaining bodhi": this is revealed along the horizontal and vertical axes. Horizontally, among the six pāramitās and myriad practices, every practice lacks the meaning of attainment; if giving attained bodhi, then precepts, forbearance, and so forth would not be needed. Vertically, among initial, intermediate, and subsequent thought-moments, every thought-moment lacks the meaning of attainment; if the initial thought attained it, why would continuous thought-moments be necessary? Thus, across both horizontal and vertical minds and practices, there is never any meaning of attaining bodhi.
