> From "in this way" onward is the application to phenomena. Perfumed by past karmic causes, one brings about present retribution; although there is no person who acts, one does not escape the cycle of birth and death. Therefore the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa says: "There is no self, no actor, and no experiencer, yet wholesome and unwholesome karmas are not lost." When one awakens from a dream, what was seen in the dream is completely nonexistent; when one has awakened from delusion, all traces of the cycle of birth and death are cut off. Therefore the Awakening of Faith says: "One should contemplate all phenomena recalled from the past as fleeting like a dream."
