> The five eyes are the physical eye, the divine eye, the wisdom eye, the Dharma eye, and the Buddha eye. A verse by an ancient master says: / The divine eye penetrates without obstruction, / the physical eye is obstructed and does not penetrate; / The Dharma eye contemplates only the conventional, / the wisdom eye completely knows emptiness; / The Buddha eye is like a thousand suns, / illuminating differences while its substance remains identical. / These five eyes thoroughly encompass the ten realms yet differ in superiority and inferiority; as the sūtra states that the five eyes are all possessed by the Tathāgata, they are none other than the Buddha eye. The minds of all sentient beings in worlds numerous as the sands of the Gaṅgā are all without exception known and seen by the Tathāgata. Yet as for saying that the various inverted minds of sentient beings are "not mind," this is because deluded consciousness is fundamentally empty. As for "this is called mind," it is because true suchness is unperishing. What is the reason for this? Below, he examines and explains the reason why it is not mind. This is because, among the minds of the three times, the past has already ceased, the future has not yet arrived, and the present does not abide; since all are illusory arisings and ceasings, when sought they cannot be apprehended.
