> This is the specific preface, also called the initiating preface. It uses begging for food as the initiation because the Buddha wished to preach giving without marks of abiding, and so first begged for food to manifest and express it. Moreover, although the Buddha takes the joy of dhyāna and the bliss of Dharma as his food, his going begging shows him to be identical with ordinary monks, wishing to cause them to break the banner of pride in themselves and produce merits in others.
