> Regarding the third passage, there are five sentences: first, generally clarifying the skillful means of leaving behind the false; second, "Why is this?", examining into the reason why the skillful means achieves freedom from marks; the third sentence reveals that the two modes of marks can achieve skillful means; the fourth sentence adduces a simile by way of illustration; the fifth sentence explains and accomplishes the dharma of skillful means. In general, discussing the raft simile involves two meanings of grasping and abandoning: first, grasping when relying on the raft; second, abandoning upon reaching the shore because of leaving the raft. In the second \[meaning\], abandoning is because while relying on the raft its function is not yet apparent; grasping is because when reaching the other shore its function becomes clearly manifest. The application to dharmas is to be gauged precisely by this. Among the four kinds mentioned above, such as the notion of a self: first, the notion of a self is seeing the distinctions among the five aggregates and falsely grasping that each individual aggregate is the self; the notion of a sentient being is seeing the mark of the body's unbroken continuity; the notion of a living being is because the life-faculty of a single retribution abides unbroken, also called the notion of a person; the notion of a life-span is because when the life-faculty ceases it is reborn, undergoing the six destinies.
