> From "When the Buddha preached the Dharma, immeasurable multitudes" downward is the third major section of the chapter, explaining that the various people awakened to the Way. "Purification of the Dharma-eye" is the path of vision of the Hīnayāna. Initially witnessing the four truths clearly, it is therefore called "purification of the Dharma-eye". When now preaching the Mahāyāna, why would one attain a lesser fruit? Preaching is one, but reception and awakening differ, and the fruits attained are distinct. As the \*Vimalakīrti\* states: "The Buddha preaches the Dharma with a single voice, but sentient beings each understand according to their kind." Another interpretation says: the Tathāgata spreads the cloud of loving-kindness and compassion and rains down the rain of dharmatā; large roots and large stems receive great moisture, small roots and small stems receive small moisture; awakening lies in the faculties of beings, not in the Dharma. It also says: initially witnessing the first bhūmi is called the path of vision, and is also called purification of the Dharma-eye. "The ground of nature" is from the ten understandings upward. "The ground of faith" is from the ten faiths downward. "All attained great emptiness": from the first bhūmi upward, the two emptinesses grow, and the mind is immersed in great quiescence, which is called "great emptiness". "Great practice" refers to the practices of the eighty-four thousand pāramitās from the first bhūmi upward.
