> Regarding the "threefold emptiness": emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. Being empty of the twenty-five states of existence is called the liberation gate of emptiness. Lacking the ten signs is called the liberation gate of signlessness. Not forming vows or seeking within the twenty-five states of existence is called the liberation gate of wishlessness. They are also called the three samādhis and the three liberation gates. What is the difference between these two dharmas? The three samādhis apply to both the contaminated and the uncontaminated, whereas the three liberation gates are exclusively uncontaminated. The Tripiṭaka master says: "The emptiness of the three prajñaptis is called the threefold emptiness; the threefold emptiness is the principle of the three lack-of-natures." Another explanation: the eighteen kinds of emptiness are called the gate of emptiness, destroying the signs of male and female is called the gate of signlessness, and not seeking amid desires is called the gate of wishlessness. As for the "four truths", there are two kinds of four truths: active and non-active. For people of the Small Vehicle, their cognitive illumination has not reached the ultimate, their cognition is termed finite, and their object is not supremely subtle; therefore, it is termed active. For people of the Great Vehicle, with the true cognition of no-mind they illuminate the empty principle of signlessness; the object is probed and the cognition is ultimate, so it is called non-active. What is discussed today are the active four truths. The oppression of sectioned saṃsāra is called suffering; not being false is called truth. Karma and defilements are called accumulation; not being false is called truth. Quiescence is called cessation; not being false is called truth. The eight path factors are called the path; not being false is called truth.
