> From “Victorious Penetration” onward explains the fifth bhūmi. The text has five sections: first, identifying the name; second, identifying the patience; third, clarifying the four fearlessnesses; fourth, clarifying the realization of the fruit; fifth, the duration of cultivation. First, identifying the name: the text says “Bodhisattva Victorious Penetration,” which is the Sudurjayā bhūmi (Difficult to Conquer). Second, explaining the patience: the text says “in the patience of conformity to the path.” A bodhisattva of the fifth bhūmi cultivates the intermediate grade of the patience of conformity, contemplating in conformity with the path of thusness, which is called the patience of conformity to the path. Third, clarifying the four fearlessnesses has two parts: first, a general identification; second, a specific explanation. First, the general identification says “with the four fearlessnesses.” From “contemplates nayutas” onward specifically explains the fearlessness of omniscience. “Nayutas of truths” translates here as hundred-billion truths. “Internal treatises” refers to the twelve divisions of the Buddha's scriptures. “External treatises” refers to the four Vedas. “Medicinal formulas” refers to the herbal pharmacopeia of rulers, ministers, and assistants. “Technical crafts” refers to skillful knowledge of constructing city walls, marketplaces, and the like. “Incantations” refers to skillful understanding of magical arts. “I am an omniscient person” concludes the fearlessness of omniscience. Second, from “extinguishing... in the three realms” onward clarifies the fearlessness of the exhaustion of contaminations. Afflictions such as doubt in the three realms are: 1. the view of individuality; 2. attachment to rules and rituals; 3. doubt. The self of persons has long been exhausted, and the \[first\] two afflictions are also removed; now doubt is first removed. Doubt is a function of mental affliction, taking the three realms as its basis and arising from the three realms; hence it says “doubt and so forth in the three realms.” “The mark of a self already being exhausted” means having no arrogance of self. Third, “knowing that each ground has that which emerges” clarifies the fearlessness of the path to the exhaustion of suffering.
