> From "Equal Enlightenment" onward explains the eighth stage, having five sections: first, indicating the name of the stage; second, distinguishing the patience; third, explaining signless contemplation; fourth, concluding with the rank of great minister; and fifth, the duration of advancing practice. First, indicating the name of the stage: saying "Equal Enlightenment Bodhisattva" refers to the Immovable Stage. Second, explaining the patience: saying "dwelling in the patience of non-arising" refers to the middle grade of the patience of non-arising. Third, explaining contemplative understanding: saying "contemplating the mind whose mental \[processes\] are tranquil and extinguished" refers to the mind of non-attainment. "Having no mark yet with mark" means having no mark of effortful functioning of the seventh stage, yet possessing the effortless mark of the eighth stage. "No body yet with body" means having no body of effortful functioning of the seventh stage, yet possessing the effortless dharmakāya of the eighth stage. "No knowing yet with knowing" means not being the same as the effortful knowing of the seventh stage, but possessing the effortless knowing of the eighth stage and above, explaining that the eighth stage illuminates all myriad realms simultaneously, knowing through non-knowing. Regarding "applying the mind to ride upon the orientations of the diverse realms": "riding" can carry sentient beings, and "orientation" (fang) means the inclination and direction of feelings, which is called fang. Therefore, the Xici says: "Orientations gather according to category." Having no fixed orientation, one responds and transforms, accommodating where beings reside; hence it says "the orientations of the diverse realms." Although transforming the diverse realms everywhere, one does not dwell in birth and death; this is untainted spontaneity, hence saying "serenely dwelling in the dwelling of non-dwelling."
