> From "Wisdom Light" onward explains the ninth stage, having seven sections: first, indicating the stage name; second, explaining the patience; third, extinguishing evils; fourth, explaining the illumination and function of the four eyes; fifth, taking birth by vow-power; sixth, the duration of advancing practice; and seventh, concluding the rank. First, indicating the name: saying "Wisdom Light" refers to the Stage of Good Intelligence. Wisdom is prajñā, light is dharmakāya, and supernatural transformation is liberation. Second, explaining the patience: saying "dwelling in the supreme non-arising patience" refers to the upper grade of the patience of non-arising; compared to the middle grade of the preceding eighth stage, it is higher than the lower grade, hence this ninth stage is named dwelling in the supreme patience of non-arising. Third, extinguishing defilements: saying "extinguishing mental characteristics" means the absence of \[conceptual\] knowing on the side of the mind. Fourth, explaining the distinct illumination and function of the four eyes. "With the Dharma-eye sees all phenomena" explains that the Dharma-eye illuminates existence; that is, the cognition of the aspects of the path, which can only take existence as an object to deliver sentient beings; hence it says "with the Dharma-eye sees all phenomena." This is merely one perspective of explanation and must not be clung to as absolute. Regarding "with the three eyes sees form and emptiness": the three eyes are the fleshly eye, the divine eye, and the wisdom eye. The functions of these three eyes differ: the fleshly and divine eyes see coarse and subtle forms, while the wisdom eye sees emptiness; the three eyes are used together, hence saying "with the three eyes sees form and emptiness." The three eyes reside among the three ranks of sages prior to the stages, the Dharma-eye upon ascending the stages, and the Buddha-eye after the path. Speaking comprehensively, each and every stage possesses all five; here it explains the establishment of four eyes specifically on the causal \[path\]. Fifth, vow-power: saying "by vow-power constantly is born in pure lands" means benefiting and transforming sentient beings through vows of non-attainment. Sixth, the duration of advancing practice has two parts: first, from "ten thousand asaṃkhyeya" onward explains advancing in dhyāna concentration; from "and is able to manifest" onward explains raising supernatural powers to benefit beings. Seventh, concluding the rank: "dwelling in the rank of Bhagavān" is translated here as World-Honoured One, also called the Stage of Destroying and Purifying—"bhaga" means destroying, "vān" means the pure stage. The "buddha-flower samādhi" is the Śūraṅgama-samādhi.
