> From 'A great fire burns the country' onward is the third \[calamity\], the calamity of fire. It has two parts: first, explaining the seven kinds of fire; second, from 'one should also read this sūtra' onward, explaining the sūtra's power to extinguish fire. As for the seven kinds of fire: 'ghost fire' refers to ghosts becoming angry with sentient beings, so that an evil fire arises at night, which also brings fever to people. 'Dragon fire' refers to dragons becoming angry and raining down poisonous fire, causing people to develop boils and swellings; this is the fire of retributive supernormal powers. 'Heavenly fire' refers to thunderbolt fires, named after heaven. 'Spirit fire' refers to transformations and manifestations. Spirits are of two types: first, an immortal becomes angry, and fire arises from their anger; second, an immortal chants mantras, causing ghosts and spirits to burn the homes of common people. 'Human fire' is named in reference to humans. 'Tree fire' can be understood \[from its name\]. 'Bandit fire' means bandits setting fire, and is thus named 'bandit fire'. 'One should also read and recite this sūtra' means the sūtra's power can extinguish fire.
