> Question: Why are they called "universal bases"? The Vibhāṣā says: "Due to two conditions: first, due to continuity, meaning resolute attention to pure blue and the rest without mutual intermixture; second, due to vastness, meaning that when resolute attention takes blue and the rest as its object, the aspect of the object is boundless; hence it is called 'vast.' The Venerable \[Dharmatrāta\] says: 'Because the object is wide and vast without gaps, it is called a universal base.'" The Samuccaya-vyākhyā says: "Its measure is vast, pervasive, and boundless; therefore it is called a universal base." The full account is as in the separate chapter.
