> Regarding the intention in stating the matter, there are briefly two kinds: first, to sever doubts; second, to generate faith. Regarding severing doubts: Paramārtha's notes state: "The \*Sūkṣma-vinaya\* states: 'When the monk Ānanda ascended the high seat to expound the Dharma storehouse, his body immediately resembled the Buddha, complete with all marks and signs. When he descended from the high seat, he returned to his original form. Seeing this auspicious sign, the assembly consequently had three doubts: first, they doubted that the Great Master Śākyamuni Tathāgata, out of compassion, had risen from nirvāṇa to proclaim the profound Dharma once again; second, they doubted that buddhas from other directions had arrived; third, they doubted that Ānanda had transformed his body and become a buddha. Now, in order to dispel these three kinds of doubts, he also uttered the words "Thus have I heard" and so forth, clarifying that Ānanda personally heard it from the Buddha, and that it was neither a matter of \[the Buddha\] rising from nirvāṇa out of compassion, nor other buddhas coming from other directions, nor Ānanda transforming his body into a buddha and preaching the sūtra himself.'" Regarding generating faith: the wondrous \*Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa\* states: "The time, the place, and the persons are stated because he wished to cause sentient beings to generate faith in their minds."
