> Question: In the Shanjie jing and other texts, nature comes before practice, so why in this sūtra does practice come before nature? Answer: The Yogācārabhūmi and other texts establish the eighth consciousness and distinguish the difference between active manifestation and seeds, taking seeds as nature and active manifestation as practice. Therefore that sūtra speaks of nature first and practice later. Now this Benevolent Kings Sūtra, the Benye jing, and others do not speak of the eighth consciousness; they treat only active manifestation and not seeds, where the initial arising is called practice, and practice accomplished becomes nature. Therefore, what is expounded in these respective texts does not contradict each other.
