- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [3.239](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1708.3.239)

> Explanation: Fifth, the expedient means of the One Vehicle. Because the principle-essence is non-dual, it is called the One Vehicle. With regard to the phenomenon of the One Vehicle, skillfully knowing the distinct characteristics of sentient beings is called 'expedient means.' 'Non-dual characteristic' explains the One Vehicle above. Within it, 'penetrating all practice-characteristics' explains its expedient means. Furthermore, the \*Suvarṇaprabhāsa-sūtra\* says: 'The dharmadhātu is without differentiation; in order to cross over sentient beings, the three vehicles are explained with differentiation.' Also, the \*Lotus Sūtra\* says: 'All Buddhas, through the power of expedient means, within the One Buddha Vehicle explain three with differentiation.' The complete explanation of the One Vehicle is discussed as in a separate chapter.
