> Commentary: "Attentively" means with careful scrutiny; collecting the ears to listen to the sounds generates wisdom arisen from hearing. "Reflect well" is wisdom arisen from reflection. "Ponder upon this" is wisdom arisen from cultivation. Carefully scrutinizing the lines and verses, reflecting on their meaning and principle, and practicing as taught—this makes them listen attentively, and so forth. Furthermore, "attentively" causes the mind to become tranquil, countering the distracted and agitated mind. "Reflect well" causes the mind to become pliant, countering false and incorrect reflections. "Ponder upon this" causes the mind to clearly remember, countering the deluded and inverted mind. Those things countered obstruct the arising of superior wisdom; if one has them, one's nature lacks capacity, just like the three vessels that are overturned, leaking, or defiled—though obtaining the flavor of nectar, it is lost, leaks away, or cannot be held. Therefore the World-Honoured One admonishes them to listen attentively, and so forth. A verse from the Da zhidu lun states: "A listener looks straight on as if drinking when thirsty, / with one mind enters into the words and meaning, / leaps with joy at hearing the Dharma, his heart filled with sorrow and joy; / to such a person one may speak." Next is the fifth \[part\], the great assembly's praise and admiration. The text is divided into three: first is the assembly praising, "Excellent!"
