> Question: In the cause stage of a bodhisattva, the meaning of "protecting" is completely established, but since the buddha-fruit is already perfect, why is there any further need to protect it? Answer: The fruit is manifested from the cause; since the virtues of the fruit are already perfect, their nature is not separate from the cause; hence it is called "protecting the fruit." If that is so, then protecting the fruit is simply the cause—what distinction is there from what follows? If cause and fruit are one, why must they be divided into two? Answer: Within this chapter, cause is discussed in terms of the fruit; in the subsequent chapter, one proceeds toward the fruit from the cause. Because cause and fruit differ in phenomenon, separate chapters are distinguished; considered in principle they are not distinct, so both are called "protecting." Next is the second \[part\]: the Tathāgata's correct answer. The text is divided into three: first, a brief indication of the central tenet; next, specific questions and answers; later, direct questions and answers. Within the first, there are four: 1. generally indicating the protection of the fruit; 2. examining its reason; 3. the Buddha explaining and establishing it; 4. concluding with the cultivation of prajñā. Within the first, there are three: now, the first is generally indicating the protection of the fruit.
