> Exposition: Explaining the name of this abiding: giving rise to a resolute mind toward great bodhi and entering the stage without regressing is called the abiding of generating the aspiration. 'Seeing the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha' is the condition for generating the aspiration. 'Buddha' refers to the Awakened One, because he can open and reveal. 'Dharma' refers to the teachings and so forth, because they produce correct understanding. 'Saṅgha' refers to the harmonious assembly of worthies and nobles of the three vehicles, because they are an excellent field of merit. Generating the unsurpassable mind initially on the basis of the Three Jewels, it is always present until the ultimate stage. 'They generate bodhicitta' means generating the unsurpassable mind and giving rise to the three wondrous contemplations, as explained before. A verse in the Mahāyānasaṃgraha says: 'Pure and sovereign power, / A firm mind advancing supremely, / Is called the bodhisattva's initial practice / Across three incalculable great eons.' The great bodhicitta has wholesome roots as its essence, great vows as its conditions, and can only arise when urged on by non-retreat; hence wholesome roots are the cause, called the 'pure power', because this can subdue what is opposed to it. Great vows are the conditions, called the 'sovereign power', because one constantly meets good friends who cause one to advance. 'A firm mind' means that even if one encounters bad friends who employ expedients to break it down, one will never retreat and abandon bodhicitta; hence it is called 'firm'. 'Advancing supremely' means that the cultivated wholesome roots continuously increase and advance ever more supremely. Those of the preceding ten faiths who enter this abiding, by possessing those ten \[faiths\], become firm and non-regressing with respect to great bodhi; only up to this point is it called the beginning of the first eon, and this very mind serves as the foundation for the ten abidings. This increasingly intensifies and accomplishes the subsequent abidings, and even the ultimate fruit is attained through this. Some say: the ten abidings are identical to the practices of the ten bhūmis. From here is the second, explaining the abiding of preparing the ground.
