> The commentary explains: 'Attaining the unobstructed comprehensions' means that upon reaching this ground, one acquires unobstructed cognition, which is called 'attaining.' As Asvabhāva's commentary on the Mahāyānasaṃgraha says: 'The four unobstructed comprehensions generally take concentration and wisdom along with their associated mind and mental factors as their intrinsic nature.' Regarding 'dharmas, meaning, expression, and eloquence': 'dharmas' is knowing the particular characteristics of all dharmas; 'meaning' is knowing the differentiated characteristics of all dharmas; 'expression' is preaching without error; 'eloquence' is preaching without interruption or end. As the eleventh fascicle of the Daśabhūmika-śāstra says: 'The achievement of vocal karma. The four spheres of unobstructedness are: first, the essence of dharmas; second, the sphere-essence of dharmas; third, correctly attaining and giving to sentient beings; fourth, correctly seeking and giving measureless approaches. First, the essence of dharmas refers to being subsumed under born dharmas that are far removed from the two extremes, such as the characteristic of resistance in form, and so on. The sphere-essence of dharmas refers to the sphere of realistic cognition within what is subsumed under those born dharmas far removed from the two extremes. The bodhisattva abides in the sphere of cognition subsumed under such born dharmas, like the aforementioned form and so forth. What is form? It refers to the false discrimination of the eye, form, and so on. Correctly attaining and giving to sentient beings refers to correctly knowing the words that others take pleasure in within that sphere of realistic cognition, and giving in accordance with the correct knowledge of their words. Correctly seeking and giving measureless approaches refers to correctly knowing measureless various words of meaning according to the words others take pleasure in, and giving in accordance with that knowledge.' That treatise elaborates based on the sūtra, but because it is very subtle and complex, it is omitted here. 'Expound the true Dharma without interruption and without end' is the unobstructed comprehension of eloquence. There are seven kinds of this, as explained earlier. From here, the second part explains benefiting sentient beings.
