> The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa says that the bodhisattva further forms this thought: 'Everything in the three realms is made by the mind alone; because according to whatever the mind thinks, it is entirely seen: through the mind one sees the Buddha, through the mind one makes the Buddha; the mind is itself the Buddha, the mind is itself my body; the mind does not know itself, nor does it see itself. If one grasps the characteristics of mind, all are devoid of wisdom; the mind is also false, all emerging from ignorance; relying on these characteristics of mind, one immediately enters the dharmatā of all dharmas.' Therefore, the contemplation of consciousness-only is supreme. 'Consciousness' means the mind. Because it is assembled and arisen from the mind, with mental painting as primary, the designation of 'only' stands independently to subsume the remaining dharmas. The word 'only' excludes the self and dharmas that are grasped as existing apart from the mind; the word 'consciousness' indicates that causal conditions and dharma-nature are neither separate from the mind, demonstrating that dharmas apart from the mind are definitely non-existent: this is named 'consciousness-only'. It does not mean that everything is exclusively a single conscious mind and that there are no other things at all, because good friends, evil friends, the various fruits, the various causes, principle and phenomenon, ultimate and conventional, are all not non-existent. The parikalpita-svabhāva is only false consciousness; the paratantra-svabhāva is only conventional consciousness; the pariniṣpanna-svabhāva is only ultimate consciousness; therefore all dharmas are not apart from the mind. As a verse says:
