> Having known the stations of learning, next one should cultivate learning. As for the methods of cultivating learning: first, with respect to the virtues of the Three Jewels, the sovereign power of the buddhas and bodhisattvas, all real meanings, unerring cause and effect, the benefits to be attained, the means to attain them, and excellent speech, well-spoken words, sūtras, and so forth, one produces pure faith, resolute conviction, certitude, and joy. Next, one should seek the Dharma: among all internal treatises on the Buddha-dharma, treatises on logic (hetuvidyā), treatises on grammar (śabdavidyā), treatises on medicine (cikitsāvidyā), and treatises on arts and crafts (śilpasthānavidyā), one should diligently seek. How should one seek? Regarding the Buddha's true Dharma, one should abide with intense love and respect in seeking to hear it; even if to hear a single sentence of wholesome Dharma the path were over iron ground, one would still joyfully enter it, how much more so wishing to hear the meanings of many wholesome words? Although one loves one's own body and various material necessities, compared to the love of the true Dharma, they are beyond comparison. Without satiation, without weariness, with deep faith, gentleness, an upright mind, upright view, love of virtue, and love of the Dharma, one goes to the Dharma master's abode; without an argumentative mind, conceiving \[the Dharma\] solely as an exquisite treasure, a wisdom-eye, the brightness of knowledge, an exalted fruit, faultless, and delightful, one engenders profound reverence; without pride, without conceiving thoughts of broken precepts, base lineage, ugliness, unskillful phrasing, vulgar sentences, or differing intentions; solely for the sake of seeking goodness, not to display one's own virtues; not seeking the true Dharma for fame or profit, one listens at the proper time, with earnestness and respect; one must not give rise to a mind that harms or habitually seeks faults, nor should one belittle oneself; solely for the sake of seeking understanding, with focused devotion one lends one's ear, cleansing and retaining \[what is heard\]. For what purpose does one seek? In the field of inner knowledge (ādhyātmavidyā), it is to cultivate oneself and beneficially awaken others; in the field of logic, it is to subdue heterodox doctrines and establish the right path; in the field of grammar, it is to cause sentient beings who take faith and delight in classical speech to engender deep respect and the like; in the field of medicine, it is to quell manifold sicknesses and bring peace and happiness to sentient beings; in the field of arts and crafts, it is to amass much rare wealth with little effort, extensively generating benefit. One must diligently seek among these five in proper sequence, so that unobstructed wisdom may arise and provisions are swiftly fulfilled.
