> By cultivating according to this, one attains the three fulfillments of karma: first, fulfillment of action, wherein because there is no deficiency or transgression, the three karmas are pure; second, fulfillment of intention, wherein one goes forth for the sake of the Dharma to seek great bodhi, even not acting for the sake of future maturation; third, fulfillment of cause, wherein having performed wonderful deeds in the past, one now attains excellent fruits and is further able to cultivate good—how could this not be peace and joy? Opposed to this are decline, ruin, danger, and suffering. For the sake of maintaining pure precepts, one abandons great wealth and status, and until the end of life there is not the slightest deficiency or transgression; constantly free from negligence and never offending by mistake, one thereby constantly obtains five benefits in life after life: first, being protected and remembered by the Buddhas of the ten directions; second, abiding in great joy at the time of death; third, having those who maintain the precepts always as close friends; fourth, the treasury of virtues becoming fully accomplished; fifth, always obtaining the precepts at birth, the precepts becoming one's very nature. To settle one's mind, accomplish the Buddhadharma, and benefit sentient beings, one should apply oneself single-mindedly and never transgress.
