> Next is cultivating the immeasurables. Sentient beings of the dharma-realm are subsumed into three classes: first, those with neither suffering nor pleasure; second, those with suffering; third, those with pleasure; toward these three classes one cultivates benevolence, compassion, joy, and equanimity. Toward the first class of sentient beings in the ten directions who seek pleasure, forming the conception of sentient beings and giving them pleasure without error is called benevolence focused on sentient beings. Conceiving them as mere dharmas and provisionally calling them sentient beings is called benevolence focused on dharmas. Furthermore, being free from conceptualizing thoughts toward all dharmas is called unconditioned benevolence. Toward those with suffering, wishing to eradicate their suffering, one cultivates compassion focused on sentient beings. Toward those with pleasure, wishing to assist their joy, one cultivates joy focused on sentient beings. Toward those with neither suffering nor pleasure, giving rise to the thought of parting from delusion; toward those with suffering, giving rise to the thought of parting from anger; toward those with pleasure, giving rise to the thought of parting from greed, wishing equally to cause them to part from all afflictions: this is called equanimity focused on sentient beings. The rest are likewise the same as before. Among the three \[types of\] immeasurables, the first is shared with non-Buddhists, the next is shared with the two vehicles, and the last belongs solely to bodhisattvas. The first three \[bring\] peace and happiness; the last one \[brings\] benefit.
