> The Sanskrit word "nirvāṇa" is in the Tang language "complete extinction" (yuanji), which has the meaning of the substance being all-pervading and the nature being serene. Although the nature of suchness has neither duality nor distinction, four types are spoken of in accordance with the exhaustive realization of conditions: first, nirvāṇa of original pure nature, which is the suchness of the dharmatā of all dharmas; second, non-abiding nirvāṇa, which is constantly assisted by great compassion and wisdom, transcending the cognitive obscuration, being pure suchness; third, nirvāṇa with remainder, which is the suchness revealed by the exhaustion of the truth of origin; fourth, nirvāṇa without remainder, which is the suchness revealed by the exhaustion of the truth of suffering. Some texts rely on the first to say that all ordinary beings and nobles possess it equally, and that all sentient beings are originally in nirvāṇa without arising or cessation. Some rely on the second to say that bodhisattvas abide without abiding, and that śrāvakas and others do not attain this nirvāṇa. Some rely on the latter two to say that those of the three vehicles equally attain liberation.
