Now this dependent origination itself has two kinds: first, saṃsāric circulation; second, cessation. Conditioned by ignorance, formations can arise, up to birth as condition for aging and death; thus flowing downstream through the five destinies and four modes of birth, like the full disc of the moon, its beginning cannot be known. Within emptiness, there is no such circulation; therefore the sūtra says, "no ignorance up to no aging and death." By the power of contemplative insight, ignorance is caused to cease; because ignorance ceases, formations also cease, and so forth up to: because birth ceases, aging and death also cease; this is returning upstream to nirvāṇa, hence it is called cessation. Within emptiness there is no such cessation; therefore the sūtra also says, "no exhaustion of ignorance up to no exhaustion of aging and death." How is this portal of the sūtra's origination explained?
