> Regarding the explanation of names, first general, then specific. As for the general name: "four" indicates the number, and "truth" has two meanings, as in the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra: first, the meaning of being inseparable from its described characteristics; second, because departing from this leads to the ultimate mental state. It is a compound characterized by a number, which can be understood according to the preceding. As for the specific names: the distinct truths differ, amounting to four kinds: first, duḥkha; second, samudaya; third, nirodha; fourth, mārga. Being constituted by the three kinds of suffering is called duḥkha; being able to bring about future fruits is therefore called samudaya; because samudaya and duḥkha are extinguished, it is called nirodha; being able to eliminate and being able to lead through, it is called mārga.
