> 1. The gate of presenting the names and identifying the essences: First, the great round mirror wisdom (ādarśa-jñāna). Just as relying on a round mirror, images of all conditions appear, so too, relying on the Tathāgata's mirror of wisdom, images of all āyatanas, objects, and consciousnesses appear. Named from a metaphor, it takes the mental associates corresponding to the eighth consciousness as its essence; there are eleven metaphors, as in the Buddhabhūmi-sūtra. Second, the wisdom of equality (samatā-jñāna). Oneself and other sentient beings are all equal; named from its function, it is called the wisdom of equality; there are ten equalities, as explained at length in the sūtra; it takes the mental associates corresponding to the seventh consciousness as its essence. Third, the mental associates corresponding to the wonderful contemplation wisdom (pratyavekṣā-jñāna): skillfully contemplating the specific characteristics and common characteristics of all dharmas; named from its function, it is called wonderful contemplation wisdom; there are ten metaphors, as explained at length in the sūtra; it takes the mental associates corresponding to the sixth consciousness as its essence. Fourth, the wisdom of accomplishing actions (kṛty-anuṣṭhāna-jñāna): everywhere manifesting various transformations and the actions to be done by the three karmas throughout the ten directions; this is also named from its function as the wisdom of accomplishing actions; there are ten metaphors, as explained at length in the sūtra; it takes the mental associates corresponding to the five consciousnesses as its essence.
