> Furthermore, these six kinds also form three pairs: The first pair: at first seeing sentient beings of the six destinies, and finally seeing the Buddhas. This is ordinary beings and noble ones paired against each other: at first one departs from being an ordinary being, and finally one converges into becoming a noble one. The second pair: first hearing the Buddha expound the Dharma, and next seeing practitioners of the two vehicles cultivating. This is expounding the Dharma and receiving the practice paired against each other: at first the Tathāgata expounds the Dharma, and afterwards the disciples receive and practice it. The third pair: seeing bodhisattvas cultivating, and seeing Buddhas entering nirvāṇa. This is cause and effect paired against each other: at first cultivating the cause of the Great Vehicle, and finally attaining the fruit of the Great Vehicle. When the fifth auspicious sign says "various causes and conditions," it clarifies that the bodhisattvas fully practice the four immeasurables and the six perfections, purifying the Buddha lands through various causes and conditions. "Various faiths and understandings" means faith, understanding, practice, dedication, and so forth, up to purifying the Buddha lands. "Various appearances" means the appearance of giving away things, the appearance of upholding the precepts, and the appearance of patience; hence it says "various appearances." These are the six kinds of auspicious signs of other lands: signifying that he must expound the Lotus Sūtra is the sign; possessing the capacity of a secret intimation is the portent.
