> The questioner says: "If he was truly in samādhi, how could one ask the Buddha? Moreover, suppose one waited for the Buddha to emerge from samādhi and only then asked the Buddha, causing the Buddha to immediately expound this sūtra, that would be the main teaching; how could it be called a prologue? One should only ask Mañjuśrī to cite the ancient to verify the present, knowing that upon emerging from samādhi he would definitely expound the Lotus; therefore, the narrative serves precisely as a prologue." The challenger also says: "As for asking, did Maitreya have these three thoughts for himself, or for the sake of beings?" The commentator answers: "His fundamental abiding was for the sake of beings; how could he formulate questions and answers for himself?"
