Yet today there is no other, distinct longness; it merely extends the past seven hundred asaṃkhyeyas to become long. It is like a pillar fifty feet long: when buried twenty feet, only thirty feet emerge; beholding the thirty feet, it is considered short; when another twenty feet emerge, there is the sense of being long, yet there is no separate longness—it is precisely because the present twenty feet continue the past thirty feet that there is the function of fifty feet. Lifespan is also like this: the past seven hundred was short, and today it is multiplied to become long, but there is no separate longness continuing the shortness to become long. It is no different from the thirty feet being short and coarse, and today's multiplication being long and sublime.
