- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.32](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1715.1.32)

> The questioner asks: 'The first general preface is also a specific preface. How is this known? For example, the location of the City of Kings (Rājagṛha) allowed this scripture to be preached, but not the Nirvāṇa Sūtra; the location of the City of Kuśī\[nagara\] allowed the Nirvāṇa \[Sūtra\] to be preached, but one did not hear the Lotus Sūtra being preached. According to such analogous cases, the locations are distinct and their events and meanings differ. How could it not be a specific preface?' The explicator says: 'It is not without this meaning. What is discussed here is that the scriptures clarify the dwelling place in order to mutually witness that what I heard is not mistaken; thus it constitutes a general preface. In saying "it is not without this meaning": for instance, the co-hearers in the scriptures are endowed with two senses. There is the sense of the general preface; therefore it appears in the general preface. There is also the sense of the specific preface: below in the specific preface it says, "At that time the World-Honoured One was surrounded by the fourfold assembly"; the fourfold assembly is precisely the aforementioned co-hearers. Furthermore, as in the Nirvāṇa Sūtra, in the general preface he was together with eighty koṭis of monks, and below in the specific preface it again says that at that time he was together with eighty koṭis of monks. In both scriptures, the earlier appearance serves to witness that it was at one time, while the later appearance acts as a preface for the principal exposition.'
