> Regarding directly praising the two knowledges together, he first praises real knowledge and later praises expedient knowledge. Just within praising real knowledge there are of themselves two phrases: with the single phrase "The wisdom of the Buddhas," intending to praise it, he first puts forward real knowledge. "Profoundly deep and immeasurable" is the second phrase, directly praising real knowledge. Why does he say "profoundly deep and immeasurable"? Vertically, it speaks of profoundly deep; horizontally, it speaks of immeasurable. The Buddhas of the three periods of time all have this real knowledge, hence he says profoundly deep; horizontally discussing the real knowledge of the Buddhas of the ten directions, he therefore says immeasurable. Looking toward it, it is boundless and obscure, hence he says profoundly deep; its limits cannot be known, hence he says immeasurable. This directly praises real knowledge. "The gate to their wisdom is difficult to understand and difficult to enter": this praises expedient knowledge, and within it there are three \[points\]. The single phrase "The gate to their wisdom" first presents the essence of expedient knowledge; the phrase "difficult to understand and difficult to enter" is second, directly praising it; from "all the śrāvakas" onwards is third, identifying the persons who do not know. Expedient knowledge is the gate of real knowledge: because expedient knowledge speaks the teachings of the three vehicles, real knowledge is able to penetrate. How is this known? Because first the three teachings are spoken and afterwards the one teaching achieves suitability. Just as right now a gate is erected through which the Buddha goes out and comes in, and it is still called the Buddha's gate without distinction, so through expedient knowledge real knowledge is able to penetrate; therefore expedient knowledge is designated and used as the gate of real knowledge. Now in saying "their," it refers precisely to the real knowledge, speaking of its gate. Who is it? It says that it is precisely expedient knowledge. Then again saying "difficult to understand and difficult to enter" is second, directly praising expedient knowledge, saying it is difficult to understand and difficult to enter because persons of the two vehicles cannot fathom this expedient knowledge, hence it is said to be difficult to understand and difficult to enter. Why is it not designated as impossible to understand and impossible to enter? If it were said to be impossible to understand and impossible to enter, yet the Buddha is precisely one who can understand and can enter, so it is not impossible to understand; however, this principle is profound and subtle, difficult to understand; only the Buddha can understand and enter it. As for who cannot understand and cannot enter, the third \[part\] therefore identifies the persons: all the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas—it is precisely these persons of the two vehicles who cannot understand and cannot enter.
