### [5.27](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1715.5.27)

> From "Therefore, through skilful means" downwards, there are four verses, which versify the application of the fourth parable of being able to rescue the sons. In the application of the fourth parable above, there were originally three sections: the first reiterated and raised the three kinds of external parables, which is not versified now. The second, "saying: 'The Tathāgata is also like this; though having power and fearlessness, he does not use them,'" closely applied the third external parable, which is also not versified now. It only versifies the third section, directly applying the fourth parable. But in the application of the fourth parable above, there were originally four sections; now here it omits and does not versify the application of the second, the meaning of seeing their capacity in rescuing sentient beings from the burning house of the three realms. In these four verses there are two tiers: the first three verses directly versify the above application of the three sections; the second one verse unites the three into one to conclude the above meaning; this is an derived meaning and does not versify the above text. Now, within the three verses, the first line versifies the application of the first, tentative adaptation with the three vehicles; the next verse and one line versify the application of the third, preaching the three vehicles for their sake; the next one and a half verses versify the application of the fourth, the sons practicing in acceptance. Now, the single line "Through these skilful means" versifies the application of the first, using the three vehicles in tentative adaptation, where it said above, "merely through wisdom and skilful means." From "Preaches the three vehicles" downwards, this one verse and one line is the second in the verses, versifying the application of the third above, preaching the three vehicles for their sake. In preaching the three vehicles above, there were originally four stages; now this one verse and one line only versifies the application of one stage, which is showing the place of the three fruitions. Above it said, "You should swiftly leave the three realms; you will obtain the three vehicles—the Śrāvaka, Pratyekabuddha, and Buddha vehicles," showing the persons of the three vehicles the place of their fruitions. The remaining three stages are omitted and not versified. From "If these sons have determinate minds" downwards, this one and a half verses is the third in the verses, versifying the application of the fourth above, the sons practicing in acceptance. But in the application of the parable above, it differentiated them, setting up four stages for each of the persons of the three vehicles; now it also versifies the application regarding the three vehicles, but does not fully apply all four stages, only versifying the fourth stage for each of the three persons. These one and a half verses inherently have two parts: first general, then specific. Now, "If these sons have determinate minds"—this half-verse generally clarifies that the persons of the three vehicles all attain the fruit of non-learning, all possessing the meaning of determinacy. The next single verse specifically clarifies that the persons of the three vehicles attain the fruit of non-learning. First, "Endowed with the three knowledges and six supernormal powers"—this half-verse is the determinate fruit of the śrāvakas, directly versifying the application to the above "this is called the Śrāvaka vehicle," which in the unfolding of the parable is "vying to escape the burning house." The single line "Some attain \[the vehicle of\] conditions and causes" versifies the application to the above "this is called the Pratyekabuddha vehicle"; the fruit of non-learning of those enlightened by conditions is also "vying to escape the burning house" in the unfolding of the parable. The single line "Irreversible bodhisattvas" versifies the application to the above "this is called the Bodhisattva vehicle," which is attaining the fruit of non-learning, also being "vying to escape the burning house" in the unfolding of the parable. The single verse below "You, Śāriputra, for the sake of sentient beings, I..." is the second, uniting the three into one to conclude the above meaning. This single verse is a derived meaning, not versifying the above text, but still belongs to the above.
