> This chapter explains five kinds of people receptively upholding and propagating the sūtra, and is therefore called the 'Upholding Chapter'. In the four chapters explaining the specific circulation there are three sections: the preceding two chapters are the first, summoning and seeking people to propagate the sūtra; this chapter is the second, explaining those who propagate the sūtra receiving the command to propagate the sūtra. There are five kinds of people making vows to propagate the sūtra, constituting five sections. The first initially explains the Bodhisattva Bhaiṣajyarāja and Mahāpratibhāna; grouping by class, there are two: first, the great bodhisattvas personally vow to propagate the sūtra. Second, it explains the śrāvakas in the assembly who received prophecy: there are five hundred people who personally vow to propagate the sūtra. Third, it explains the trainees and non-learners who received prophecy personally vowing to propagate the sūtra. Non-learners have already severed the fruition of the three realms; how can they propagate the sūtra in a pure land? The explanation says: 'For non-learners, in truth there is no rebirth in either pure or defiled lands, but for the sake of propagating the sūtra they reorient semblance untainted karma and lodge in rebirth within the three realms; if one analyzes this retribution, it is in truth not a retribution of the three realms.' The fourth section, from 'At that time, the Buddha's maternal aunt' downward, explains the community of nuns personally vowing to propagate the sūtra. From 'At that time, the World-Honoured One looked upon the eighty sextillion' downward to the end of the chapter is the fifth, explaining the eighty sextillion great bodhisattvas making vows to widely propagate the sūtra. Although there are five kinds, inferring according to their classes there should be three sections: the first explains the bodhisattvas of great practice circulating it in defiled lands; the second, the intermediate three kinds of people, explains śrāvakas circulating it in pure lands; the third, the last kind of person, circulates this sūtra in both pure and defiled lands alike.
