> This chapter explains that the life span of the Tathāgata takes dust motes and sands as its measure; hence it is called the "Life Span" chapter. From here down to the end through half of the "Distinction of Merits" chapter is the fourth section, which extensively explains the long duration of the life span, cutting off doubts and generating faith. Within this fourth section, there are also three sections: first, this single chapter properly and extensively clarifies the long duration of the life span; second, the first section of prose in the "Distinction of Merits" chapter comprehensively confers predictions upon the contemporary assembly; third, Maitreya speaks verses versifying the Buddha's prose, demonstrating an identical appreciation and understanding. Moreover, within these three sections, the points of meaning increase by one: in the first section there are two, in the second section there are three, and in the third section there are four. Now, within the first, the proper extensive exposition, there are two: first, explaining the causal arising; second, the proper extensive exposition. Now within the causal arising there are naturally three stages: first, from "You should believe the sincere and truthful words of the Tathāgata" onward, it clarifies that the Tathāgata first issues three admonitions; second, from "At that time the great assembly of bodhisattvas" onward, it clarifies that Maitreya and others, on four occasions, reverently accept the Tathāgata's command, praying only that he speak of it; third, from "At that time the World-Honoured One" onward, it clarifies that the Tathāgata again reiterates the admonition.
