> An objector says: 'How could beings of the four modes of birth, such as snakes and vipers, have the appearance of white hair and wrinkled faces? Furthermore, how could they now already ride in carriages and wear necklaces?' The former explanation says: 'It is a hypothetical supposition that these beings suddenly transform into human beings, and then one uses precious jewels to give to them; having given to them, one next is further able to transform and guide them to attain the four fruits; this is why it is spoken of in this way. Yet it is still inferior to giving rise to a single thought of rejoicing upon hearing the Lotus Sūtra.' The explanation says: 'Although this person suddenly renounces kingdoms and cities and further causes \[others\] to attain the four fruits, this is merely worldly retribution and does not escape birth and death. Now, since this person hears what is spoken in the Lotus Sūtra—that the five hundred yojanas should be crossed and the marvelous culmination of the fruit of buddhahood should be reached—this person at that time gives rise to a single thought of determination, single-mindedly seeking to leave this birth and death and seek that fruit of buddhahood; such merit is truly vast. Moreover, a bodhisattva originally takes personal practice as the beginning and transforming others as the chief \[aim\], generating the intention to cross the five hundred yojanas to seek the fruit of buddhahood afar; yet the mind that transforms others causes beings of the six destinies to leave the five hundred perils and dangers and together attain the perfect, ultimate, and marvelous fruit. Therefore, this mind is profound and vast, and truly cannot be appraised by giving kingdoms, cities, or the four fruits. Furthermore, the planting of blessings from hearing this Lotus Sūtra has no equal; possessing the superior and marvelous retribution of the purification of the six sense faculties, it cannot be calculated by reckoning.'
