> Furthermore, within each and every teaching, each has the twelve divisions of sūtras, which are also given rise to by using the siddhāntas. If sentient beings constituted by the Dharma of the ten causes and conditions take joy in hearing matters of the worldly realm of correct causes and conditions, the Tathāgata directly expounds for them the provisional and real phenomena of the aggregates, realms, and sense fields, etc.; this is called sūtra. Or in verses of four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine syllables, repeating the matters of the worldly aggregates, sense fields, etc.; this is called geya. Or directly predicting the future matters of sentient beings, up to predicting that pigeons and sparrows will attain Buddhahood, etc.; this is called vyākaraṇa. Or independent verses, expounding matters of the worldly aggregates, sense fields, etc.; this is called gāthā. Or without anyone asking, expounding worldly matters on his own; this is called udāna. Or establishing prohibitions based on unwholesome worldly matters; this is called nidāna. Or expounding worldly matters by means of parables; this is called avadāna. Or expounding matters of past worldly realms; this is called itivṛttaka. Or expounding matters of past rebirths; this is called jātaka. Or expounding the vast and great matters of the world; this is called vaipulya. Or expounding unprecedented matters of the world; this is called adbhuta-dharma. Or questioning and disputing worldly matters; this is called upadeśa. This is the worldly siddhānta giving rise to the twelve divisions of sūtras in order to bring joy to sentient beings; or making twelve kinds of expounding to generate wholesome roots in sentient beings; or making twelve kinds of expounding to destroy the evils of sentient beings; or making twelve kinds of expounding to cause sentient beings to awaken—this is called the four siddhāntas giving rise to the twelve divisions of sūtras of the Tripiṭaka.
